To get to West Head Lookout would require you to drive. From Kellyville, it is about an hour drive, I figured I would do a solo hike today so let’s go!

About 10km out from the lookout, you’ll reach the National Park entrance (it will cost you about $12 per vehicle to enter (or free if you have a National Park pass)). Once you enter, it’s about another 10 minute drive to West Head Lookout. I parked my car up here as they’ll be a few walks that starts from around here. The view up here is one of the best in Sydney.

You’ll be able to enjoy a paranomic view of Palm Beach right across from West Head Lookout. My intention was to fly my drone here, but unfortunately, for this part of the park, it was a no fly zone 🙁

I got some good snaps of the view with my camera though. You should definitely spend a few minutes up here, it really is worth the drive. Ok, now that we are done with the view, let’s do some walks! This week one will be fairly easy and relaxing (next week I intend to do a 40km hike!), so we’ll walk to Resolute Beach and Mackarel Beach. (Also, I forgot to pack my lunch and just had 2 protein bars on me..)

From West Head Lookout to Resolute (the circle loop) will take you about an hour. I didn’t rush this, as wanted to enjoy the view and it was a short one. Feel free to head to the beach for a good dip or swim!

From Resolute Beach to Mackarel, it’s about another 30-40 minutes depending on pace. Nothing to hard. The trail is quite narrow though so watch your steps.

You’ll have views of the beach the whole way!

Watch your steps when climbing down to Mackarel Beach as it’s not really well marked. Once you get to the Beach, you can take a ferry here to Palm Beach and perhaps grab some fish and chips there and continue hike to the lighthouse. To be honest, I didn’t want to spend $12 on the ferry ride, so decided to start my walk back towards West Head Lookout. Essentially the same route, the last 10-15 minutes is a bit of an incline, but nothing no one can handle. From West Head to Mackarel via the resolute loop (both ways) it’s about 8-9km and no longer than 3.5 hours.

Decided to drive around the National Park after this and walked around Basin Camp area.
